Hortikultura 2018

Living in the city has always had its perks. From the bustling economy, a wide range of shopping malls to choose from to the sleepless rendezvous. But once in a while, you’d be telling yourself that you’d need a breather! With the countless room for opportunities, the metro has its dark, looming side, air pollution that is!      So how can you escape this impending health hazard? With plants of course! Plants have this powerful ability to cleanse our air off the harmful substances, particularly carbon dioxide. The more plants the better of course!  Apart from cleaning the air that we breathe in , plants also  lend a very calming and refreshing  ambience. Studies show that indulging your peepers in anything green is a form of relaxation.

Since we are in the metro spawned by massive buildings and edifices how can we go about introducing more greeneries into our homes and environment? The Philippine Horticultural Society Inc or PHSI is a non-profit organization  of plant lovers whose advocacy is to spread  , once again, the enthusiasm for plants . Some of the organization’s mission is to promote the preservation and conservation of native plant species, to promote awareness and appreciation of plant life and to promote affiliation with international plant communities.  With the efforts of  the PHSI, the metro will hopefully breathe  fresher air  again. It can always begin in our own homes and communities!     In line with this advocacy, the PHSI will be holding a “grand greenery event ” on February 2018!

On Feb 2-11, a massive greenery festival will showcase our own endemic, and hybrid plants. Celebrated annually, the Horikultura Filipina 2018  will also showcase several gardening and horticultural practices in manila. If you are aching to grow out your own garden in your homes but don’t know how, this is the perfect event for you! As per the organization, you need not be a plant expert or one with the so called “green thumb “to cultivate your own garden. You just need to know the  basic knows and how’s. This is one of the goals of the organization, to make gardening and cultivation of plants accessible to everyone! To keep up the excitement, we’ve heard that they are also going to showcase some plant species that may cost up to 2 M pesos ( eyes popping!)  So set your calendars for one of the country’s widest  greenery festival, the HORTIKULTURA 2018.

Activities to expect at HORTIKULTURA 2018

TRADE FAIR, ORNAMENTAL POTTED PLANTS COMPETITION, STREET DANCING, INSTALLATION ART, PHOTO EXHIBIT OF PHILIPPINE ORCHID SPECIES, BONSAI EXHIBIT, TERRARIUM, AQUA SCAPE VIVARIUM EXHIBIT, GARDEN TOUR, DAILY RAFFLE, ACOUSTIC NIGHTS, DAILY LECTURE AND WORKSHOP,ORCHIDS ASEPTIC CULTURE EXHIBIT, DAILY RAFFLE.

Romancing October: #romanceclass FeelsFest at Glorietta 5

Buy some feels & listen to a little love at the #romanceclass FeelsFest on Saturday, October 22, at Glorietta 5

Ghosts, skeletons, and cobwebs might be decorating the windows of shops these days, but why give in to fear when you can celebrate love in October? And why drown your sorrows and stress in beer at Oktoberfest when you can go on a rollercoaster of emotions at #FeelsFest? At least that’s what the folks from the #romanceclass community of authors and readers figure!

Mark your calendars: The #romanceclass #FeelsFest will be on October 22, 2016, at Glorietta 5 in Makati. Authors will be on hand to meet readers and sign books. They’ll be selling indie romance books—many of which you won’t find in your typical bookstore. There will also be games, giveaways, the launching of over 15 new titles published by indie authors just this month, a book donation drive for Ayala Malls’ Little Free Library, and the much-anticipated live readings!

In fact, #romanceclass live readings are show stealers, thanks to the feels delivered by actors invited to read excerpts from romance novels. Previous live readings have been punctuated with shrieks and sighs. #FeelsFest will mark the fifth official live reading event, the last one held just last month at the Manila International Book Fair. #FeelsFest will feature new live readings from #romanceclass books. (Visit http://romancepodcast.com/ to get the audio versions.)

The #FeelsFest live readings will feature performances by Gio Gahol, Rachel Coates, Hervin Alvarez, and Gabriela Pangilinan. Expect to hear scenes from books by Mina V. Esguerra, Ines Bautista-Yao, and more.

“The #romanceclass community is all about encouraging each other to read, write, and publish books we love,” says author Mina V. Esguerra, whose books include Tempting Victoria, What You Wanted, and Iris After the Incident, all of which and more will be available for sale at the event. “#FeelsFest is our chance to give back to the community of readers and friends who’ve supported us. We get to have a little fun, and maybe meet some new people who love a good love story as much as we do.”

So if you like to hug your hugot close and are addicted to happy endings, drop by Glorietta 5 on October 22. Selling will begin when the mall opens, and the official program is scheduled for 2PM to 6PM.

For more information about #romanceclass, visit http://romanceclassbooks.com, where you’ll see a catalogue of the authors’ books along with other information about the community. #FeelsFest is brought to you by Ayala Malls.

7-11 7-Election Every Gulp Counts Campaign

The great thing about being in a democratic country is that we are able to participate in naming our political representatives. Having the right to vote empowers us and brings about changes that can forever alter the face of politics in our country. Come May 13, 2013, we are once again given that opportunity when we vote for 12 senatorial candidates.

In line with this, 7-11 has come up with a fun way of voting for your chosen candidates in the coming elections via their 7-Election Gulp Campaign. A cup has a corresponding barcode which in turn is equivalent to one vote. Each cup bought will represent a specific party (Team PNOY, Team UNA, and Independent Candidates/Kapatiran/Makabayan/Social Justice Society/Democratic/Bangon Pilipinas). The voting is from March 20 to May 6, 2013 at all 7-Eleven stores. The steps are very easy. Just choose a cup then get your drink. After that, a store clerk will ask which party you want to vote for and scan the barcode.

Results will be updated weekly at 7-11 stores but you can also checkout http://www.7-election.com.ph/ for updates as well as 7-11's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Stay tuned for the final results on May 7, 2013.

Binibining Pilipinas 2013 Winners

I like watching beauty pageants so I just had to watch the Binibining Pilipinas 2013 coronation last night even if it ended around 1:00 am. This year's celebration is made all the more important because Binibining Pilipinas celebrates 50 years of beauty this year. Past winners paraded in the opening of the show with 1969 Ms. Universe winner Gloria Diaz appearing the last. Held at the Araneta Coliseum, the event was full of beauty and glamour. I must say that all the 50 contestants were beautiful.

The Q & A proved to be quite a revelation though. Since all the semi-finalists were stunning, you'd be able to pick out the eventual winner (Ms. Universe) through this portion. I was so disappointed with the answers of most of the ladies especially because the questions asked were good and relevant. Most of them just didn't answer sensibly. Ariella Arida, who was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Universe, had the best answer in my opinion. It's supposed to be beauty and brains but unfortunately most of these women only had beauty. One even answered in Tagalog which is just fine with me. But the problem was I thought she'd be able to answer the question nicely since she's already speaking in Tagalog but then again her answer was cringe worthy. Anyhow, I hope next time they'll screen the contestants more carefully. It's really a big turn off when you listen to these women speak.

Having said that, I like the Ms. Universe winner (Ariella Arida). She's actually the only one I like. Here are the other winners:
  • Bb 20 Bea Rose Santiago - Bb Pilipinas-International
  • Bb 39 Mutya Johanna Datul - Bb Pilipinas-Supranational
  • Bb 16 Joanna Cindy Miranda - Bb Pilipinas-Tourism
  • Bb 15 Pia Wurtzbach - First runner up

Who Will Win at the Oscars

Since I'm such a couch potato, it's not just TV shows that I enjoy watching. I also watch a lot of movies especially the ones that are critically acclaimed and made a lot of money at the box office. I'm pretty excited about this year's Oscar Awards. So far I've only seen four of the Best Picture nominees namely Les Miserables, Argo, Life of Pi, and Silver Linings Playbook. Among the titles I've mentioned, I liked Argo and Silver Linings Playbook the most. But I think Argo will win because its story is more "relevant". The other nominees are Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty.

As for the Best Actor nominees, I've only seen Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman and they're both amazing. They're up against really talented actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, and Joaquin Phoenix. For Best Actress the nominees are Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Naomi Watts.

Aside from the winners, I'm also looking forward to seeing the elegant gowns that will be paraded on the red carpet. Who will be a hit and who will be a flop fashion wise. So be sure to watch the live telecast on Feb. 24.

World Bazaar Festival 2012

I've been hearing a lot about the bazaars taking place at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. Since I wasn't able to go to the Noel Bazaar two weeks ago, I told myself that I would have to go to the World Bazaar Festival. I had some time yesterday so off we went. There were hundreds of stalls to shop from and I'm sure shopaholics will drool once they see all the wonderful merchandise. My sister was in a hurry so I didn't have a chance to see all the 800 stalls and I wasn't able to buy everything I wanted. :(  I bought some cute accessories though and a toy for my nephew. I might go back next week to shop some more. There's just so many nice bags, blouses, jeans, accessories, kitchen items etc. that I want to see again. The entrance fee of P50 is worth it.

The country's grandest Christmas bazaar will run until December 23, and is open from 12nn. - 10 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and 10 a.m. - 12 mn. from Friday to Sunday.

Happy Halloween!

In this part of the world Halloween or All Souls Day has always been celebrated as a spooky occasion where you're given the chance to remember the souls of your dearly departed loved ones by offering a prayer for them or going to the cemetery. I never really saw it as a fun occasion where you get to wear weird and scary costumes. Not until my nephew JB asked me to go trick or treating with him at SM Mall of Asia. He begged me to buy a costume for him, which I gladly did. Seeing his face light up at the sight of the skeleton costume is priceless. He was so excited about getting all those candies from different stores and seeing other kids wearing costumes. After a few hours of walking then eating at Shakeys we decided to go home. JB was so tired that when his head touched the pillow he just immediately went to sleep.

Here are some pictures of him wearing the costume. I didn't have the chance to take a picture of him at the mall since all he wanted to do was get candies. Hehe..
