Who Will Win at the Oscars

Since I'm such a couch potato, it's not just TV shows that I enjoy watching. I also watch a lot of movies especially the ones that are critically acclaimed and made a lot of money at the box office. I'm pretty excited about this year's Oscar Awards. So far I've only seen four of the Best Picture nominees namely Les Miserables, Argo, Life of Pi, and Silver Linings Playbook. Among the titles I've mentioned, I liked Argo and Silver Linings Playbook the most. But I think Argo will win because its story is more "relevant". The other nominees are Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty.

As for the Best Actor nominees, I've only seen Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman and they're both amazing. They're up against really talented actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, and Joaquin Phoenix. For Best Actress the nominees are Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhane Wallis, and Naomi Watts.

Aside from the winners, I'm also looking forward to seeing the elegant gowns that will be paraded on the red carpet. Who will be a hit and who will be a flop fashion wise. So be sure to watch the live telecast on Feb. 24.

I Love Silver Linings Playbook

I heard about the movie Silver Linings Playbook when Jennifer Lawrence won as best actress in a drama movie at the Golden Globe Awards. I really had no idea what the movie was about so when my sister downloaded the movie, I was quite excited. I don't want to go into details about the movie because those who would like to watch it might not appreciate that. But I just have to say that I totally loved the movie! All the actors gave intense performances and the story was beautiful. It was both light and serious. I also like the fact that the romantic part of the movie was not that evident at the movie's beginning but only came about at the end. Bradley Cooper's character is so messed up that he only realizes that he's in love with Jennifer's character towards the movie's end.

Both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are up for trophies at the Oscars as well as Robert De Niro who plays Bradley's dad. It's been a while since I saw a movie like this which made me laugh and cry. I embraced the main characters' imperfections and realized how realistic the movie was. It's all about second chances and that no matter how "flawed and damaged" you think your life is, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel.

The Bourne Legacy in Entertainment Tonight

I don't know if any of you saw Entertainment Tonight's feature on The Bourne Legacy shown some time last week. Jeremy Renner as well as Rachel Weisz were interviewed by Mark Steines and they were asked about the movie and shooting some dangerous stunts in the streets of Manila. Some clips were also shown. I'm very excited to see this movie because I saw the trailer and it looks like one hell of an action movie. Of course I also want to see the scenes shot here in the Philippines. I can't wait for August 8!

I Love Spiderman!

I just came from SM Sucat because I watched The Amazing Spiderman with my family. I won't do a movie review so as not to spoil everybody's viewing experience. But suffice to say that I went home wanting to see the movie again. You won't go home disappointed. I don't know if it would have made any difference if we saw this on a regular screen as opposed to 3D because everything about the movie is exciting. Though the tickets were quite expensive, we were able to save since I exchanged my Citibank points for one free ticket. I must admit that I had reservations when I first heard that Andrew Garfield would play the beloved hero. But all those doubts vanished when I saw how good an actor he is. The role really fits him to a T.

Watch The Amazing Spiderman with the whole family. The kids will definitely enjoy it. Plus, there are lessons to be learned in the movie.

A Day with the Prince of Persia

I didn't have any plans of watching the movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in a theater until a friend gushed about it and convinced me to see it. I'm not a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan but I must say that the movie is something else. It was raining so hard last Sunday morning so I thought that we would just stay home and scrap the whole movie thing but then again the desire to see the movie was greater than anything. My family and I arrived at SM Sucat quite early so we still had time to visit some of the stores in the mall. The movie started at 11:20 and I was relieved that there weren't too many people in the theater which was fine with me since I don't like jampacked movie houses. Probably it was because of the rains and it was already the second week of showing. Anyhow, I decided to relax and just enjoy myself. And that I did. The movie was very entertaining and you wouldn't notice the almost two hours of runtime. The story is simple but the fast-paced and exciting action scenes from start to finish more than made up for it. The cast did a great job and Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan and Gemma Arterton (the love interest of Sam Worthington in Clash of the Titans) as Princess Tamina are eye-candy. Since this is a fantasy-adventure movie you'd expect that the hero will triumph against all adversity and evil and will come off unscathed. I was really amazed at how lucky and good Prince Dastan was. This movie still didn't make me a Jake Gyllenhaal fan but it made me a fan of the movie itself. I would definitely watch the sequel. I'm so sure there will be one.
